Agroforestry, as the name suggests, is neither pure forestry nor pure agriculture. It is quite simply the growing of trees and crops on the same piece of land to achieve maximum organic benefits and land use. Research shows that agroforestry can be more biologically productive than if the trees and crops were growing in monocultures, in other words separately on their own.
The integrated trees and the crops benefit each other to enable maximum organic use of the land. During a forest's early years there are many opportunities to interplant crops between the trees which are not only profitable but also organically provide nutrients into the soil stimulating tree growth. Wildlife and birds also thrive in this habitat, which also encourages insects which feed on crop pests providing organic control.
Agarwood, one of our core forestry species, grows well beneath the canopy of the trees, as does tea. Other suitable crops include maize, snakefoot, dragon fruit, pineapple, bananas, mangoustine, mangos, peppers, chillies, and lemon grass.
Oxigen is growing only proven, well-known crops such as maize, which have a global market value and performance history. There is a ready market: Sri Lanka for instance has an annual shortfall of some 225,000 tonnes of maize. By increasing Sri Lanka's indigenous output, the need for imports is reduced - along with the reduction in the carbon emissions created in the importation process by shipping in from overseas, one of the highest contributors to global warming.
Agroforestry is a new and different type of Plantation, which can deliver fixed returns. Clients can buy individual or multiple land holdings in 10-acre blocks from £25,000 (£2,500 per acre) on one of Visit Our Plantations. From Oxigen, backed up by harvest profits, the owner will receive an annual rental income of 8-10%, paid quarterly. All Oxigen's clients must qualify as experienced investors under the Financial Services Act.
